Cats have over 100 vocal chords

Cats have two sets of vocal cords in their throat, one above the other. Each set produces different sounds. The lower vocal chords produce the ‘meows,’ and the upper vocal chords produce the “growls” and “purrs”. All these sounds are produced by vibrations due to increased activity in major blood vessels in the area of the vocal chords.

Cats possess at least 10 times as many vocal chords as dogs.
